The Bonn Climate Change Conference will take place from June 3 to 13, 2024. Climate finance will certainly be the subject of intensive negotiations. We are inviting you to discuss the outcome with us and to reflect on its consequences for the upcoming negotiations.
In view of the worsening climate crisis and the lack of ambitious climate protection measures, more national and international climate financing is needed overall than is currently being provided.
Responsibility for historical emissions is not taken and there is only talk of climate change but very little action. Yet climate finance is the topic of the current year of climate diplomacy. It will determine whether negotiation agendas are adopted, whether talks make progress and whether the COP29 climate conference in November will be a success. Climate finance and the associated division between the countries of the Global North and the Global South is a perennial point of contention and at the same time an opportunity to move the negotiations forward.
And right now, climate finance is needed to help mitigate emissions, adapt and repair damage or compensate for losses - for the disadvantaged in both the Global North and the Global South, such as smallholder farmers, who are finding it increasingly difficult to farm as climate conditions change.
Simultaneously, national understanding of the need for climate financing from Germany and the EU for countries in the Global South is dwindling. International cooperation is under increasing pressure to justify itself and it is becoming more and more difficult to communicate, why it is so important and also in our own interest.
With different perspectives from North and South, young and established civil society, we want to discuss how climate finance can be secured, expanded and communicated. We warmly invite you to join us and contribute your perspective.
